The City of Purple Dye and Submerged Silence

Located in a narrow neck of the Sıçak Peninsula between Kaş and Kekova, Aperlai was a production center for "Tyrian Purple," the luxury symbol of the ancient world. Today, with ruins half-submerged, Aperlai is a hidden paradise accessible only to adventure seekers.

Turning Points of History

Founded in the 4th century BC, Aperlai gained great wealth through the production of purple dye extracted from sea snails, despite being a small port city. This dye was used exclusively for the clothing of emperors and nobles at the time. The city maintained its strategic importance until the Byzantine period, but over time, its docks were submerged by rising sea levels.

Underwater Treasures: Sunken Docks and Sarcophagi

The most fascinating aspect of Aperlai is that the docks and harbor structures are now about 2 meters underwater. While snorkeling, you can see the walls of ancient shops and sarcophagi. On land, the fortification walls, church remains, and Lycian sarcophagi lined up on the slope showcase the city's protected structure.
