Kaleiçi’s Window to the Mediterranean
The Hıdırlık Tower, one of Antalya’s most iconic landmarks, stands majestically on the cliffs where the walls of Kaleiçi end and Karaalioğlu Park begins. With its square base and cylindrical upper section, this mysterious tower has served as both a defensive bastion and a lighthouse guiding sailors for centuries. Today, it remains one of the city's most beloved viewpoints, offering uninterrupted vistas of the Beydağları Mountains and the Gulf of Antalya.
Layers of History
While its exact construction date remains unknown, it is believed to have been built in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian. Strong evidence suggests it was originally designed as a monumental tomb (mausoleum). Over time, it was integrated into the city’s defensive walls, functioning as a watchtower and lighthouse. It maintained its strategic importance through the Seljuk and Ottoman eras, undergoing numerous restorations.
The Structure of the Tower
Standing approximately 14 meters tall, the Hıdırlık Tower features a unique hybrid architectural design. It consists of a massive square pedestal surmounted by a large cylindrical drum. Built with huge ashlar blocks, the interior contains stairways leading to the upper level. Recent archaeological excavations around the tower have revealed Roman palace ruins and ancient pathways beneath the structure.
