The City of Law at the Peak of Cebel-i Reis

Established at the foot of the magnificent Cebel-i Reis Mountain of the Taurus, 25 km east of Alanya, Laertes draws attention with both its geographical location and intellectual past. Claimed to be the birthplace of the famous ancient writer Diogenes Laertius, the city was a disciplined settlement known for its property laws and social order in antiquity.

Turning Points of History

Although the history of Laertes bears traces dating back to the Late Hittite period, the current ruins mostly belong to the Roman and Byzantine periods. The famous "Laertes Inscription" found in the city (now in the Alanya Museum), which regulates property rights, is one of the most important documents showing how advanced law was in the ancient world. Thanks to its mountainous structure, the city was protected from invasions and preserved its cultural fabric for a long time.

Life at the Summit: Agora and Towers

The city is surrounded by valleys on three sides, and the ruins are spread out in terraces. The agora, located at the heart of the city, is decorated with pedestals for imperial statues. Additionally, the odeon, bath ruins, and the massive towers providing security for the city are worth seeing. The carved sarcophagi in the city's necropolis hosted the noble families of Laertes.
