The Medusa-Headed Fortress of the Taurus
Perched on the peaks of the steep mountains north of Alanya, resembling an eagle's nest, Colybrassus—known locally as "Ayasofya"—is a strategic defensive city. Located on the border of Pisidia and Cilicia, this city is an ancient world designed for adventurous spirits, with its monumental staircases carved into steep slopes and its mysterious atmosphere.
Turning Points of History
Founded in the Hellenistic period, Colybrassus served as a military garrison and commercial center controlling the routes descending from the Taurus Mountains to the coast during the Roman and Byzantine periods. An inscription found in the city documents that an elite Roman military unit was once stationed here. Inhabited until the Middle Ages, the city later surrendered to silence.
The Medusa-Guarded Tomb and the Secret of the Rocks
The most iconic structure of the city is the massive rock-cut tomb reached by an 18-step monumental staircase carved into the bedrock in the necropolis area. The magnificent "Medusa Head" relief decorating the entrance of this tomb, along with the eagle figures beside it, has guarded the city for centuries like a protective talisman. Furthermore, the Ionic temple on the west side, which remains standing almost to roof level, is one of the best-preserved religious structures in the region.
