Arycanda, derived from 'place next to the high rock,' stands as one of the oldest settlements in the Lycian region, nestled amidst the borders of Arif Village along the Finike-Elmalı road in Antalya. Its strategic location, perched upon steep cliffs like Şahinkaya in the north, emphasizes its defensive significance. Abundant water springs further enhanced its appeal.

Thriving on trade, Arycanda flourished along key regional trade routes despite its distance from the sea. Its architectural grandeur, evident in remaining structures, reflects its prosperous past. Initially serving as a secure haven during Roman times, the city prospered through timber trade until earthquakes and Arab raids led to its eventual abandonment.

Arycanda's history traces back to the 4th century BC, with rock tombs and the Temple of Helios as its earliest remnants. Most structures, however, hail from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, marking the city's zenith.

Notable landmarks include the Odeon, built under Emperor Hadrian, the well-preserved theater, the stadion for sports events, and the agora, heart of the city with its rock-carved shops. Bouleuterion, the city's parliament building, and the Temple of Helios are also prominent. The basilica, dating back to the 4th century AD, reflects an early embrace of Christianity.

The 'Great Bath-Gymnasion Complex' epitomizes Arycanda's architectural splendor. Its necropolis boasts monumental tombs, while waterways, a vital resource, still carve through rocks. The city's water distribution system, managed through channels beneath main streets, underscores its engineering prowess.

Arycanda's tiered layout offers panoramic views, making it a captivating destination amidst pine and cedar trees, providing ample shade for visitors exploring its historical marvels.
