Lycia’s Grand City on Terraces

Climbing from Finike towards Elmalı, Arykanda stands as if suspended from a mountain slope and is arguably the city with the most beautiful view in Lycia. Its architecture is so adapted to the challenging conditions of nature that the city overlooks the valley like a stadium. In antiquity, Arykandians were famous for being "lovers of pleasure and luxury"; looking at the grandeur of the city, it is not difficult to understand why.

Turning Points of History

Its name, meaning "Place beside the High Rock," makes Arykanda one of the oldest cities in Lycia (2nd millennium BC). Reaching the peak of prosperity during the Roman period, the city felt like a resort town with its monumental baths, theaters, and villas. Joining the Lycian League in 184 BC, the city continued its existence until the 11th century AD after earthquakes and economic changes.

Engineering Marvel: Baths and Terrace Theater

The most fascinating structure in the city is its theater, carved into the slope with its back against steep cliffs. The stadium right above it is one of the best-preserved ancient sports areas in the world. The city's massive bath complex is the greatest evidence of the importance Arykanda placed on water and luxury. Agoras and monumental tombs built on terraces turn the city into a vertical architectural masterpiece.
