Where Fish Whispered Prophecies

Located very close to Myra, Soura is less of a typical city and more of one of the most interesting "oracle centers" of the ancient world. Dedicated to Apollo, this sacred site was considered the religious heart of Lycia with its mysterious rituals.

Turning Points of History

In antiquity, Soura was a destination where sailors and statesmen stopped to receive news of the future. The city existed primarily as a center of faith ruled by the priests of Apollo rather than a political power. It maintained its sanctity during the Byzantine period, and a basilica was built over the site.

Mystery of the Waters: Temple of Apollo and the Prophetic Pool

Soura’s greatest secret is the prophetic pool where water still wells up today. According to ancient writers, priests would throw meat into this pool and make predictions based on how the fish approached the food. The Temple of Apollo right next to the pool and the acropolis walls on the hill are the main structures completing this mystical atmosphere.
