From Pirate Cove to Sailors' Refuge

Located near Kumluca's Karaöz bay, where the sea is bluest, Melanippe was one of the most important stopovers of antiquity. As a port city, Melanippe was the safest refuge for sailors during stormy weather due to its small but strategic location.

Turning Points of History

With a history dating back to the 5th century BC, Melanippe reflects Lycia's seafaring identity in its purest form. Also used as a naval base against Rhodes, the city became an important religious center during the Byzantine period. The walls at the entrance of the harbor show how carefully the city was protected against pirate attacks.

History Rising from the Sea: Basilica and Walls

Although most of the ruins are under vegetation today, the large Byzantine basilica on the shore and the remains of the ancient breakwater can still be noticed. The city's acropolis is on a hill overlooking the sea, from where you can see the beginning of the road to Cape Gelidonya Lighthouse and the vast Mediterranean.
